Back in the old days. Back before the Bible went digital and you could get it on phone, computer, or tablet, it was only paper and leather. We used those crazy things called pens, pencils, and highlighters. Okay, I'm being a wise guy. But there is something to be said for the old way. You could underline, jot notes, make stars, draw arrows and anything you wanted and you had the assurance that it would be there the next time you opened that page. I know, you can do some of those things in a digital Bible to personalize it. However, writing in your Bible, marking in it, and doing things that help you dig for revelation - that helps you to drink deeply from God's well of truth - is enriching and fulfilling. I would guess that many of us have Bibles that show their wear from being "well-loved" over the years.
The point is this. You can mark in your Bible to great or lesser degrees but...is your Bible impacting your life in such a way that it is making indelible and enduring marks on you? Does the eternal engrave itself on the temporary? Does this remarkable Word which has been from the beginning shape your minutes and moments? Isaiah got it right!
"The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever." (Isaiah 40:8)
My prayer is that God's Word would so permeate my life that it pops up in my thoughts with ever greater frequency every day. And as a result, that it would lead to greater glory for the Savior who calls us through its verses. May it be so for you too.
